Diplopia (Double Vision)
What is Diplopia (Double Vision)?
Diplopia (more commonly known as double vision) occurs when one object appears as two
objects. It can be either horizontal (side-by-side) or vertical (above each other). Double vision is one
of the most troublesome visual disorders that a patient can experience because it can disrupt their ability
to read, walk and perform common activities. Diplopia is characterized by the use of one eye for fixation,
while the other eye is directed at another point within the field of vision.
How is Diplopia Managed?
Prisms, orthoptics (muscle therapy aimed at realigning the mis-aligned eye), eye exercises and eye muscle surgery are all options for managing double vision. The goal of each of these treatments is to establish clear vision for the patient. Surgery is usually not considered initially because some patients recover function over time.
