Common Eye Problems

Dermatochalasis

What Is Dermatochalasis?

Dermatochalasis is a long way to say baggy eye lids. It occurs most often in people over 50 years of age. Since tissues around the eyes are very movable and loose, they are most likely to develop early wrinkles and droops.

What Causes Dermatochalasis?

Dermatochalasis is caused by elastic fibers beneath the skin's surface. These fibers become stretched, which causes a thinning and protrusion of the skin. The soft, loose tissue of the upper lids is most frequently affected by dermatochalasis.

Sometimes the skin actually lies on top of the eyelashes. This makes it so patients must elevate the brow with the muscles of their forehead and scalp to keep their eyes open. Not only does this potentially obstruct the upper portion of vision, but it may also cause headaches and excessive fatigue. The lower lids may also be affected, but usually to a lesser degree. The lower lids do not usually cause the general vision difficulties, like the upper lids; but many patients find them to be a cosmetic concern.

What can be done for Dermatochalasis?

Dermatochalasis may be improved with eyelid surgery. During the surgery, excess skin and occasionally the underlying muscle is removed. Bruising and swelling often accompany the procedure, but scarring after surgery is normally minimal.
