Corneal Abrasion
What is a Corneal Abrasion?
A corneal abrasion is a minor trauma to
the ocular surface. It feels like a painful scratch or scrape on the cornea (the clear part of the eye). Some potential
causes of corneal abrasions include: an object hitting the eye, an object in the eye, a foreign body lodged under the upper
lid scratching the surface of the eye with each blink, an irritated eye being rubbed excessively and a contact lens that has
been worn longer than recommended.
What are the Symptoms of Corneal Abrasion?
Some of the most common symptoms of
corneal abrasion include: eye pain, foreign body sensation in the eye, tearing, blurred or decreased vision and spasm of the
muscles around the eye causing squint.
What are Treatments for Corneal Abrasion?
Treatments that are available for corneal abrasion include: antibiotic eye drops or ointment,
eye patches, pain pills and bandage contact lenses. Also, wearing sunglasses may help alleviate the pain.
